Ash Class

January 2018

November 2017

Our learning this autumn term has been focused around forces and our topic is ‘May the Force be with you’.

In English, we have explored various texts. Firstly, we looked at the picture book ‘The Silver Serpent Cup’ by Johnan Emmett and work on creating an audio report. The children thoroughly enjoyed role plying this story and commentating on the race.

Next we enjoyed the story ‘Don’t let the Pigeon Drive the Bus’ by Mo Willems. We investigated this picture book and the emotions of how the pigeon used persuasive language to try to drive the bus.

Finally, we are enjoying Naughty Bus by Jan Oke and exploring Calligrams from this story and creating our own adventure story. We are also linking this to designing a stop motion animation.

We are also planning on looking at Mrs Armitage on Wheels by Quentin Blake, Mr. Gumpy's Motor Car by John Burmingham, Vintage Vehicles, non-fiction books about Victorians and a variety of Christmas stories (time permitting).

In maths, we developed our knowledge and understanding of the number system including place value and addition. We played lots of games and solved problems to help us build fluency in these areas. This half term, we are developing our skills in subtraction, length, height and weight.

In Science, we have been testing how fast our cars would go on different surfaces and we even came up with how to make a fair test!  This half term we are investigating the properties of magnets and the children are currently thinking of questions they want to investigate further.

Our school value for the first half term was ‘Respect’. We are proud to say that other adults working and visiting in our class have commented how respectful the children are to each other. We have also had other opportunities to practise showing respect such as, when the farm visited and the children were very kind and gentle with the animals. Gemma also brought her baby daughter in, Isla and they were encouraged to ask questions, some of which were extremely sensible.

This half term we are working on ‘Individuality’ and we have begun to look at what special qualities we have.

Finally, Ash Class has had the unique experience of beginning to learn to play the ukulele with Jeanette and Bob. They have had lots of fun!

April 2017

During Book Week, we enjoyed the story ‘James and the Giant Peach’. We developed our understanding of verbs using the book ‘One Day on our Blue the Savannah.’  As we learnt about life here, and also following our visit to Marwell Zoo, we wrote postcards from the Savannah, describing our favourite       animals.  Using the book ‘Animal Diaries - Elephants’ we learnt about how elephants live. We explored the similarities and differences between elephants and humans. We also learnt about the challenges they face from   predators and humans; we then created newspaper reports to highlight these issues. We have used our newspaper articles to create a book, which is available to view in the Reception Area.

In maths, we have developed our knowledge and understanding of counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We have looked closely at money and have had great fun with the water working on capacity activities.

What will we be learning in the Summer Term?

Our topic for the Summer Term is ‘Changes’

Please see below for our topic overview which details what we will be learning within each subject area.

How can you help?

· Encourage your child to share their reading book and other texts with you.

· One of our texts, ‘Window’ will focus on speech bubbles. Perhaps you could read a comic or create some speech  bubbles for any photos or pictures that you have at home?

· Within PDL, children will be learning about food groups, healthy eating and personal hygiene. Maybe you could make some healthy snacks together or sort the food in your fridge/cupboard into different groups?

· In science, we will be learning about the properties of materials, including how materials can change; this      includes changes to food when mixed, heated and cooled/frozen. Perhaps you could do some cooking together and talk about the changes that happen?

Should you have any questions regarding your child or their learning journey, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Many thanks Jo Fleet
